Guess what this is made out of?

If you click on this and get a larger view, see if you can guess what this is made from. The faces are not hand done, but everything else is. I'll leave the answer in the comments.

The colored sections are all made from butterfly wings. I got this at one of my favorite antique stores, in the country, in an old, beautiful barn.

Real butterfly wings? Oh my goodness, that's incredible (and a little gross!)

Fascinating though, absolutely fascinating, thanks for sharing with us, Renee.

wow! That's unbelievable. I was going to guess paper.

Renee - quick unrelated question - do you have in your family someone associated with TAN publishing? My husband is at the trade conference this week and had dinner with someone from there who mentioned his brother-in-law's barn burning down last week and insurance problems. We just wondered if it was the same barn you talking about in a recent post.

Yes, Kitty, that was my other brother. I am going to that trade show today, so maybe I'll look up Ian while I'm there!

Wow! now that you mention it, I can see the butterfly wings upon close inspection. Absolutely gorgeous.

And, I'm smiling at the small worldliness of blogging! Isn't that awesome?
